Black Panther saw King T’Challa briefly lose the throne of Wakanda, before defeating Killmonger. However, the rightful ruler then lost his life to Thanos’ Snap in Avengers Infinity War. And with that Avengers Endgame five year time jump to 2023, just who was ruling Wakanda?
After all, with T’Challa resurrected at the end with everyone else, will he now have to contend for the throne again in Black Panther 2?
By the looks of how happy he and his family are during the closing scenes of Avengers Endgame, our best bet is he’s been restored to the throne.
But for all Marvel fans know, this could have come at the cost of a temporary ruler reluctantly having to step down, even if they were pleased to see their king back.
But who was it?
It would certainly be a twist, but Marvel have been very good at those over the last decade.
Black Panther 2 is set for release in May 2022, with Ryan Coogler returning to write and direct.
Following the first film’s release, the filmmaker spoke out on future sequels.
He told Screen Rant: “Without getting into specifics, what I’ll say is something that I kind of, you know, what I struggled with at first is the difference between T’Challa in the comic books versus T’Challa in the MCU. And I always think that the differences lie in how old he was when he lost his father.”
Coogler continued: “You know, in the comic books he’s very young when [his father] T’Chaka is killed. In the MCU, he’s a man, you know? And those are two different things.
“So, you know, in the [books] he was kind of a guy who was a child king, you know? He got his throne when he was very young. So when you meet him you know you dealing with a guy who’s thirty-four years old who’s been king for a long time.
“So he has a different type of poise and confidence in his position, you know? Whereas, in our film, that character is just settling in. So I’d be really interested to see, you know, what kind of king he is with experience and how that affects his performance in the stories.”
Black Panther 2 is released in UK cinemas on May 6, 2022.
