1) 12 Years a Slave (2013)
Set in the year 1853, it tells the memoirs of Solomon Northup, a free African American born in New York, who was kidnapped by two swindlers and taken to the south of the country to be sold as a slave. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and has the participation of Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
2) Like Water for Chocolate (1992)
This Mexican film is located between 1910 and 1917; Based on Laura Esquivel’s novel, it follows the story of Tita, who is forced to stay single to take care of her mother, so she has to hide her love for Pedro for many years. It was nominated for several awards and features performances by Lumi Cavazos, Regina Torné, and Marco Leonardi.
3) The Duchess (2008)
Set in 1774, which tells the story of the English aristocrat Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, and her tumultuous life within a failed marriage in which she is forced to live with her husband’s mistress until she falls in love with a young politician. 5) Les Miserables (2012)
This film is set in France in the early 19th century and tells the story of Jean Valjean, who, after being wanted by a ruthless policeman for years, decides to take care of an orphan girl. The story comes to an end just before the June 1832 Insurrection in Paris. It is a film with musical scenes, and Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Amanda Seyfried participate.
6) V for Vendetta (2005)
An interesting option since it is based on 1988 comics that talk about what the world would be like in 2020. 9) 10,000 BC (2008)
Around 10,000 BC, this film recounts the life of D’Leh, a mammoth hunter who begins to relate to Evolet. When horse warriors capture Evolet and the men of his tribe, D’Leh must embark on an odyssey to save the life of his true love. Despite its criticism, it was a box office success and features performances by Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, and Cliff Curtis.
10) Schindler’s List (1993)
Based on Thomas Keneally ‘s novel Schindler’s Ark, it tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, who, along with his wife Emile, saved over a thousand Jewish children during the Holocaust in 1939 by hiding them as employees inside his munitions and utensils factory during the beginning of the Second World War. Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, and Embeth Davidtz participate in the film.
